Who here doesn’t want to be a social media influencer? It is arguably one of the most sought-after titles in today’s day and age and it isn’t just about being internet famous. There are perks, luxuries and networks that one can tap into just by building a brand around themselves on social media. Being an influencer can also be a stepping stone to clinching that dream job or getting into entrepreneurship.
Looking at social media at large, we spot two kinds of influencers – independent & sponsored. Independent influencers are not affiliated with any organization whereas sponsored influencers tie up with companies to promote their goods and services. What is common between the two is how they use the power of their social network to reach out, build and influence communities online. By creating engaging content, these influencers nurture and grow their audiences. So how can you get a piece of this pie?
Know your objective – The first question you need to ask yourself is why do you want to become a social media influencer? Do you want to be the go-to personality for advice on a particular subject? Do you want to promote the sales of your product or service? Do you want to create an image that can land you an endorsement deal with a reputed brand? Once you have narrowed down on your goals, you can get into the nitty gritty of how you can achieve it.
Find your voice – It is important to stand out in the world of social media where there are always people talking about a wide variety of topics. Defining a voice, and carving your content in accordance with it, is a great way to showcase who you are and stand out from the general crowd.
Pick the right platform – Once you get a sense of the kind of content you are going to be talking about, you can chose the medium that will be the perfect home for it. You can also expand this across various social channels to increase your reach. Depending on whether you are good with pictures, videos or just text you can create content specifically for different social platforms and build a dedicated audience.
Always have a content plan – It is important to always be two steps ahead when it comes to planning your content calendar. Consistency is always appreciated and ensures that your community is always engaged and knows what to expect. Define how often you’ll be publishing content and stick to it. Work out why people will want to read your content, refine your message and then plan your posts for the next several weeks. You don’t have to stick to the plan rigidly, but make sure that your content must have its own individual value.
Promotions and Community Management – Now that you have started putting out content, it is also important for you to get the word out. Promote your work with others online and share it wherever appropriate. You can also take this offline and reach out to people in your area, and those in your business network. Encourage online discussions about your work, and incorporate suggestions from audiences to show that they are heard.
Be Patient – It will seem easier to overthink your plans and never get started, or to post a couple of times and then let your content plan slip. So, once you start things off, always remember to stay consistent, not skip posting, make your presence evident and shine no matter what.
Now that you know, get cracking on that plan. And before you know it you could be a social media influencer yourself, the real millennial dream.
