The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is an annual celebration of Indian cinema in all its forms. Produced by Mind Blowing Films, The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is now returning for its 5th year along with festival favorites, which includes Q&A sessions with an impressive list of great Indian stars and filmmakers, Master Classes and Panel discussions with influential Indian and Australian figures, the Short Film Competition and the Bollywood Dance Competition. The festival will also coincide with Indian Independence Day and a flag hoisting celebration will take place in Federation Square.
Melbourne’s annual celebration of Indian cinema will be taking place from 11th to 21stAugust celebrating ‘Female Empowerment’ as this year’s unifying theme. The IFFM 2016 will be highlighting women in cinema, as they strive for equality and empowerment. This will be showcased through cinema from India featuring critically acclaimed documentaries, art house movies, Bollywood box-office hits, the short film competition and the inspiring and challenging stories and experiences from the festival guests. Festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, “This theme was an obvious choice for us with so many of this year’s films portraying strong and vibrant female characters, while female directors turn the focus on inequality and liberation. We are delighted to have some really inspiring pioneers including Vidya Balan and Leena Yadav as special guests.”
The stellar list of stars features Bollywood legend Rishi Kapoor, who over the last forty years has played the romantic lead in over 90 films, from the super-hit Bobby in 1973 to his most recent turn in Kapoor and Sons. Other VIPs include Leena Yadav, director of the internationally acclaimed Parched, the IFFM opening night film; Bollywood’s new “it girl” Radhika Apte; bold Bollywood actress Richa Chadha; award-winning director of Autograph and Rajkahini, Srijit Mukherjee; National Award-winning actress Rituparna Sengupta; Shakun Batra, director of Kapoor& Sons; dancer and actress Malaika Arora Khan, and the forever endearing IFFM Ambassador VidyaBalan.
The biggest and most glamorous event of the festival and easily a highlight of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is the Awards Night. This year the ‘Westpac IFFM Awards Nigh’ will include a very special ‘Empowerment Concert’ bringing together Indian and Pakistani artists, with a special collaborative show from Sara Haider, Suzanne D’Mello and Shalmali Kholgade, amongst other talented acts.
